THE REST of the workout was next to useless. All I did was watch and worry over Ronnie. I didn’t have a chance to get him alone to talk to him, so all I could do was wonder. In the sauna after working out, he at least seemed up to his normal storytelling, so I sat back and hoped to hell the heat sweated out my concern. Of course it didn’t help much, and after rinsing off, I used the whirlpool and then went into the showers.

Ronnie and the guys played their usual games, snapping towels to see who could leave the biggest marks on whose backside. I swear, get any four guys together and they instantly reverted to the age of the youngest guy minus a decade. I stayed out of the line of fire, cleaned up, and left to get dressed.

The guys were making plans to go to lunch, but I didn’t feel up to it. I was tired and needed some alone time. I walked with the guys out to the front and said good-bye.

“You aren’t coming?” Ronnie asked. “It’s Thai food, your favorite.”

“I’m going to go home and get some things done. Have fun at lunch, and I’ll call you later.” I forced a smile and walked out to my car. Maybe a little distance between me and Ronnie would help me get some perspective. I threw my bag in the trunk, lowered the top on the car, and slowly drove the mile or so home.

I should have known that sitting home alone with my thoughts, eating a ham sandwich because it was all the food I had in the house, wouldn’t make me feel better. I ended up throwing part of it away and banging the back door as I went outside to putter in the yard. Working out or gardening usually helped me work through whatever problem I had. The former hadn’t done anything, so I tried the latter. It didn’t really work very well either, but I did get the last bed in the yard cleared of weeds and mulched.

My phone chimed with a message. It was Ronnie.

Where are you?

At home in the garden, working, I answered and set my phone aside.

Why?

That was not the response I expected.

I need to get some things caught up because I was gone.

I can think of a million things more fun to do than that. I’d rather put my nuts in a vise than do yard work.

At least his raunchy sense of humor was returning.

I like it.

I figured that was the end of the exchange, set my phone in the grass, and returned to my work. It remained silent, and I continued edging the bed.

“So, Captain Cock, what in the hell are you doing?”

I set my tool aside. “What are you doing here?” I asked as Ronnie strode across my lawn. “I figured you’d still be at lunch, talking.”

“Nope. Jerry had to be somewhere, and Bobby said he had to visit his mother. Phillip begged off, probably to smoke some pole somewhere.
